About Special Programs and Collaboratives
Southeast P-16 Program
This initiative is different than other educational reform efforts because it impacts the entire educational spectrum - not just the parts. The five purposes are: 1.To improve student achievement to high levels by focusing on interlocking, cross-sector changes in our educational systems; 2.To help students move smoothly from one educational sector to another; 3.To ensure that all students who enter post-secondary education are prepared to succeed; 4.To improve post-secondary admission and success rates of minority students and students from low income groups; and 5.To link more fundamentally teacher education, the public schools, and local communities in educational reform.
The Georgia P-16 Initiative is necessary because genuine improvement in our educational system requires partners willing to work together toward the shared goal of improving student success, because:
- Today's economy requires some form of post-secondary education for all students,
- Our society needs the contributions of all its members,in a democracy, all children have a right to a high-quality education,
- Faculty and support staff in our educational systems have a responsibility to see that all children and youths learn at high levels, and
- There is a need to educate young people and returning adults who are prepared for work.
Furthermore, the University System of Georgia is phasing in higher admissions standards for the 35 public colleges and universities. Like fielding a good high jump team, students must be coached effectively while the admissions bar gradually is raised. This helps students improve their academic preparation, meet new challenges, and succeed in college and the workplace.
