Several Special Education degrees are offered from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Each is explained below so that you may determine which program is right for you:.

If you are seeking an undergraduate degree in Special Education, the Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) degree is your choice.
However...........
If you have:
  • An undergraduate degree in any area
  • Do not have any teacher certification
  • Have provisional certification (e.g. non-renewable)
You have 2 choices
Earn a masters degree and certification by applying for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program
OR
Become eligible for certification without earning a Masters degree by applying for our Teacher Certification Program (TCP) which is offered completely online

If you have:
  • An undergraduate degree in any area
  • Hold a clear renewable certificate to teach
  • You should apply for the Master's Degree in Education (M.Ed.) program
M.Ed. Options
  • Adaptive Learning (for renewable certificate holders in SPED)
  • Behavior Disorders (for renewable certificate holders in SPED)
  • Learning Disabilities (for renewable certificate holders in SPED)
  • Generalist (for renewable certificate holders in any Educational field)
Bachelor of Science in Education (Undergraduate Degree)

Is this the program that is the best match for you? To apply for admission to the BSED you must have:

  • Completed the majority of the CORE including the following courses in AREA F : EDUC 2120, EDUC 2130, EDUC 2110, CEUG 1010, CEUG 3012, CEUG 2100 plus SPED 2001 and EDUC 3100 with a grade of C or better
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Admission applications must be submitted to the department no later than April 29
  • A passing score on the GACE Basic Skills Assessment or SAT verbal and quantitative subtests scores that total 1000 or a 43 on the ACT, English and Math subtests
  • Verification of current CPR training
  • A signed notification of essential functions form
  • A positive result of a current criminal background check
  • A LiveText account (required in EDUC 3100)
  • Proof of teacher liability insurance
  • Two program disposition forms completed by references who know your work ethic and attitudes
  • Two PEU Candidate Disposition Forms completed by two AASU professors (Must be submittted in LiveText) Access directions here
  • A meeting with an advisor to review the program of study and secure guidance on how to proceed with the application process

Teacher Certification Program (Leads to certification but not to a graduate degree)

Is this the program that is the best match for you? This program leads to certification in general special education. It does not provide a Master's degree. To apply for admission to the TCP program you must:

FIRST: Apply for admission to graduate studies via the AASU School of Graduate Studies located in Victor Hall, second floor, or call 912-344-2798 or go to http://gs.armstrong.edu/admissions.html
In addition to the Graduate Studies requirements, you also must submit or have the following:

  • A GPA of 2.5 or higher on an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • A provisional teaching certificate or a paraprofessional certificate
  • Hold a position as an teacher or support person in a SACS accredited school
  • A Verification of employment form signed by your employer

NEXT: To apply for admission to the TCP program within the Department of Special and Adult Education, you must have:

  • Passing scores on the GACE Basic Skills Test (for exemptions go to www.gapsc.com/TeacherTesting/TeacherTestingFAQ.asp )
  • Activation of a LiveText account and completion of an independent training module (go to www.education.armstrong.edu/livetext )
  • Completion of the following courses with a C or better: CEUG 1010, CEUG 2100, and EDUC 6000. Failure to complete these courses prohibits admission to candidacy.
  • Two PEU Candidate Disposition Forms completed by two AASU professors (Must be submittted in LiveText) Access directions here
  • A meeting with an advisor to review the program of study and secure guidance on how to proceed with the application process
  • A letter of intent
  • Four program disposition forms completed by references familiar with your work ethic

NOTE: Students are limited to nine semester hours prior to admission to candidacy.

Courses in this program of study are available via the INTERNET. You must have consistently reliable INTERNET access to take any course that is offered via the INTERNET.

Master of Arts of Teaching in Education (Graduate Degree)

Is this the program that is the best match for you? This program of study leads to candidacy for a Master's degree and can lead to certification in General Special Education. To apply for admission to the MAT program you must:

FIRST: Apply for admission to graduate studies via the AASU School of Graduate Studies located in Victor Hall, second floor, or call 912-344-2798 or go to http://gs.armstrong.edu/admissions.html
In addition to the Graduate Studies requirements, you also must submit or have the following:

  • A verification of employment form signed by your employer or a signed permission form for a criminal background check

Master of Education (Graduate Degree)

Is this the program that is the best match for you? This degree is designed for those who wish to pursue advanced studies. This degree does not lead to certification. To apply for admission to the MEd program you must:

FIRST: Apply for admission to graduate studies via the AASU School of Graduate Studies located in Victor Hall, second floor, or call 912-344-2798 or go to www.gs.armstrong.edu
You must submit or have the following:

  • Verified , clear renewable teaching certificate
  • Official transcript(s) from undergraduate degree.
  • Official transcripts from any graduate level courses completed
  • Verification of a 2.50 or higher GPA on an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • An essay on a topic relevant to the field of special education (To be written under supervision on campus)

NEXT: To apply for admission to the MEd program, in the Department of Special and Adult Education, you must have:

  • Completion of LiveText training module and an activated account (go to www.education.armstrong.edu/livetext )
  • Completion of the required research course plus an assessment course with a “B” or better in each
  • A meeting with an advisor to review the program of study and secure guidance on how to proceed with the application process

NOTE: If a course in your program of study requires that you work in a school setting, you will be required to submit a signed permission form for a criminal background check.
