Careers Program

Growing Your Own (continued)

  • Program standards that begin with a strategic selection process and provide financial, emotional, and academic support.
The Scholars entered the program with exemplary work records, better-than-average college grades, impressive speaking and writing skills, and a commitment to teaching in urban environments.  The program provided the Scholars with financial support in the form of tuition, books, and funds for unanticipated emergencies; tutorials; counseling support for crisis management; and ample opportunities for networking among themselves.

  • Curricular modification that allows for flexible scheduling, includes strategies for teaching urban populations, and builds on cultural strengths.
The advisory committee included representatives from throughout the university community.  These committee members initiated dialogue among colleagues who were willing to alter course syllabi to incorporate strategies and styles for teaching urban populations, teach courses in urban schools, and serve as mentors for Scholars.
