Courtesy Placement Policy

Note: The Courtesy Placement Form is available on the Office of Field Experiences, Clinical Practice and Partnerships' web site.

A courtesy placement is defined as a school site placement in a county or location outside the College of Education's geographic service region. For example, an Armstrong College of Education teacher candidate may be placed in Bulloch County to complete an internship while being supervised by a clinical faculty member from Georgia Southern University. Courtesy Placements are arranged by the Office of Field Experiences, Clinical Practice and Partnerships in conjunction universities or colleges in the identified service area and in compliance with the College of Education policies and procedures governing such placements. Interns may not attempt to arrange their own placements. Interns will not be placed in schools where close relatives (siblings, children, spouse, parents, grandparents) are employed.
Courtesy placements are granted only when it has been demonstrated by the teacher candidate that placement in a school within the AASU College of Education geographic service area will create an undue hardship on the teacher candidate. In addition, courtesy placements are only granted when an accredited university agrees to supervise the intern in an accredited school. The College of Education's Office of Field Placements and Clinical Practices will determine the suitability of the placement.

The teacher candidate is responsible for all applicable internship fees at both universities. All requirements of the host university will need to be fulfilled by the teacher candidate. In addition, AASU will require two dispositions and a midterm and final Performance Outcomes Assessment (POA) to be completed jointly by the University supervisor and the cooperating teacher. If the teacher candidate is a teacher of record, the principal or designee may complete a dispositions form. The University supervisor will complete the POA.
To request a courtesy placement, the Armstrong College of Education teacher candidate must write a letter describing in detail the hardship created by internship placement in a school within the AASU College of Education's geographic service area. The letter must state the location desired should a courtesy placement be granted.

The deadlines for submitting request letters are as follows:
Spring Internship II October 1
Fall Internship II March 1

1. The teacher candidate will be present evidence he/she has passed the GACE content assessments, prior to the application deadline.

2. The teacher candidate will present the request letter and proof of GACE content assessment passing scores to his/her College of Education academic advisor. The advisor will review the letter and the teacher candidate's GPA, academic standing, and eligibility for Internship II. It should be evident to the advisor that the candidate is prepared and capable of completing the internship successfully. The teacher candidate must have completed all course work prior to Internship II, with the exception of ECUG 4300 which is completed with Internship II.

2. The advisor will write a brief statement either in support of or disapproving the request. S/he will add the candidate's GPA and state whether the candidate has met eligibility requirements for Internship II. The advisor will sign and date his/her statement.

3.The advisor will submit his/her statement along with the candidate's letter to his/her department head within five working days of receipt of the candidate's letter. The department head will review the request letter and the statement from the academic supervisor in order to make the decision to approve or deny the request.

4. The department head will write, sign, and date a brief statement either approving or denying the request. A copy of this statement, the advisor's statement, and the request letter will be sent to the Director of Clinical Practice, Field Placements and Partnerships. A second copy of each document described herein will be placed in the teacher candidate's department file.

5. The Director of Field Experiences, Clinical Practice and Partnerships will notify the teacher candidate in writing of the department head's decision within five working days of receipt of the decision statement. A copy of the notification document will also be sent to the department head for inclusion in the candidate's department file.

6. Should the department head have any concerns about the request or the advisor's response, s/he will discuss these concerns with the Dean of the College of Education.
